The Hidden Challenge of Hybrid Infrastructure
Every year, Uptime Institute’s Global Data Center Survey provides one of the clearest snapshots of where digital infrastructure is heading. The 2026 findings paint a picture of an industry under growing pressure driven by AI, increasing rack densities, power constraints, and continued talent shortages.
But perhaps the most important takeaway isn’t about what’s happening inside the data center. It’s about what enterprises now have to manage outside of it.
Enterprise infrastructure has reached a turning point
For the first time in the survey’s 16-year history third-party environments, including colocation, cloud, hosting, and SaaS providers, now account for a larger share of enterprise IT workloads than corporate-owned data centers (46% versus 44%). Uptime Institute expects that gap to widen further, with third-party environments projected to host 48% of enterprise workloads by 2028.
That’s good news for flexibility and scalability, but it introduces a new level of operational complexity.
Each new cloud platform, colocation facility, network provider, and regional carrier adds another layer of responsibility. More suppliers. More contracts. More portals. More service records. More escalation paths.
When everything is working, that complexity often goes unnoticed. But when something fails, it quickly becomes a business problem.
As enterprise infrastructure becomes increasingly distributed, organizations need more than resilient connectivity. They need a unified operational view of the environments, providers, and services supporting their business.
Outages are becoming more expensive
The survey shows that impactful outages continue to become less frequent, reflecting years of investment in resilience. However, the financial consequences continue to increase.
According to Uptime Institute’s latest research, 71% of operators that experienced an outage said their most serious incident cost at least $100,000,* while one in ten outages was classified as serious or severe.
For enterprise organizations, restoring service is about more than simply fixing technology. It’s also about coordinating multiple providers, understanding dependencies across environments, and ensuring every stakeholder is working from the same operational picture.
As digital infrastructure becomes more interconnected, operational visibility can make the difference between a quickly resolved incident and prolonged business disruption.
AI will assist operations, not replace them
Artificial intelligence continues to reshape digital infrastructure, but the survey suggests operators are becoming more measured about where it should be applied.
Confidence in AI’s ability to improve facility efficiency has fallen from 58% to 52%, while confidence that it will reduce human error has dropped from 51% to 40%.* Trust remains highest for lower-risk applications such as operational analytics and predictive maintenance, with far fewer operators comfortable allowing AI to make autonomous operational decisions.
That reinforces an important reality. Technology can accelerate operations, but it cannot replace accountability.
As infrastructure becomes more distributed, experienced operational teams become even more important because someone still needs to coordinate suppliers, prioritize incidents, validate information, and make critical decisions when business services are at risk.
Visibility is becoming a competitive advantage
The challenge for enterprises has evolved from site connection to maintaining visibility across an increasingly fragmented infrastructure estate.
Understanding which supplier owns each service, how applications depend on underlying connectivity, where risks exist, and how incidents should be escalated has become just as important as the infrastructure itself.
Organizations also continue to face growing operational pressures. Uptime found that 53% of operators now report difficulty finding qualified candidates for open roles, highlighting the importance of simplifying operations wherever possible.
This is why many enterprises are moving beyond managing individual circuits, providers, or contracts and instead focusing on operational visibility across their entire communications ecosystem.
Complexity is now the challenge to solve
The latest Uptime Institute research reinforces a trend many enterprise IT teams are already experiencing: infrastructure is becoming more distributed, more interconnected, and more operationally complex.
The organizations that succeed will continue to invest in more infrastructure, but also focus their investments into better operational control. Because when every application depends on multiple providers working together, visibility, coordination, and accountability become just as valuable as the network itself.
